Memories Working with Todd Cochrane
I remember the first meeting we had when we started to discuss creating a podcasting company in April of 2005. Todd had a lot of great ideas, so many we didn’t know where to start. Todd got us so motivated we started working on our tasks that night – I was architecting the company’s first podcast web application based on his vision, and the rest was history as they say. He was a true visionary and wanted to make podcasting as simple and easy as possible for anyone with a voice.

The Story of the founding of Blubrry/RawVoice could have been scripted for a movie. From April to November of 2005, five of us worked nights and weekends messaging and calling each other on chat, Skype, and free conference call services to create Todd’s vision. We were located all over the country – Todd in Hawaii, Brian in Colorado, Barry in Michigan, Jeevan in New York City, and myself in Ohio. Todd managed our schedules and led us to launch our first podcast service, “Podcaster News” on December 7, 2005 at the first Portable Media and Podcast Expo in Ontario, California. This was the first time we all met each each other in person, as video conferencing apps were not yet mature enough at that point. It was like we were old friends from childhood.

If you had the luxury of hanging out with Todd after hours hopefully you had the opportunity to hear some of his stories while he served in the Navy. Nothing scandalous, but he sure lived life to the fullest. Some of the things he did serving our country is admirable, we owe him a debt of gratitude for his service. Thank you for your military service Todd Cochrane!

Todd did a lot to support the podcasting community including hosting the People’s Choice Podcast Awards since 2005. He also hosted a special 24 hour podcast on the holidays to raise money for Veterans.

Todd wrote the first book on podcasting in 2005! He was adamant that we participate in the first industry association, the Association of Downloadable media and later with the IAB’s podcasting committees. Even during the days when podcasting was no longer considered “cool” (from about 2008-2012), Todd kept us focused on the long term, focusing on helping podcasters with distribution and providing support for the podcasting community.

In the summer of 2014 my wife was diagnosed with cancer. Todd was very supportive, he would say “family comes first”. That assurance made such a difference in my life at the time. This is Todd Cochrane, you couldn’t ask for a better leader.
Rest in peace Todd, your impact on so many of us who had the opportunity to work with you is everlasting, the contributions you have made to the podcasting industry will live for generations!
